Description:Pumas takes its nickname from the American football team also run by the university, whose origins date back to the 1920s. An early coach would regularly tell those players to "play like pumas". A puma, if you're unaware, is a large cat also called a cougar or mountain lion, The UNAM American football team took its colors from the University of Notre Dame football team in the United States, several of whose coaches taught the sport to UNAM students. The football Pumas (and other UNAM sports teams) adopted the same colors when they were formed. Although the offical foundation date is 1954, an UNAM team had been playing in amateur tournaments for many years. Pumas are traditionally supported by students and alumni of Mexico's national university, UNAM. Estadio Olimpico Universitario:The Estadio Olimpico Universitario (University Olympic Stadium) is located in the Ciuadad Universitario (University City) section of Mexico City. It was the prinipal host of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the scene of the famous black power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.
