Description: Zagłębie means "coal field", an appropriate name for a club based in a traditional mining region. Indeed Zagłębie Lubin is now owned by KGHM Polska Miedź, a mining company based in Lubin. They are one of the largest companies in Poland. The nickname Miedziowi means "the copper miners". Zagłębie are a multi-sports club, which features hockey and handball among others in addition to football. Zagłębie Lubin were relegated at the end of the 2007-08 season because of their part in a match-fixing scandal. If they finished in the bottom 3, the normal relegation zone, they'd go down to the third division. Otherwise they'd be in the second division. In the end they went down to the 2nd division.
Of their earlier names, OMTUR stood for Organizacji Młodzieży Towarzystwa Uniwersytetów Robotniczych; Zawisza refers to a 15th-century Polish folk hero - Zawisza The Black of Garbowa; Gwardia refers to the Gwardia, the Polish Interior Ministry during the Communist era; and Spójnia was a kind education circle in the 19th century that promoted the Polish language and Polish independence.
Zagłębie Lubin's emblem includes a hammer and chisel in the backgroud (traditional Polish mining symbolism) and an eagle, a symbol of Silesia. The city of Lubin is located in the southern Polish region of Silesia.
The stadium name - Stadion Górniczego Ośrodka Sportu - translates as Mining Sports Center Stadium.
