The Zweite or 2. Bundesliga (The Second National League) is the second tier of the German football pyramid. The 18 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The season runs from August to May with a six week winter break. The top two clubs are automatically promoted while the 3rd-placed team goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 16th team from the Bundesliga. The bottom 2 clubs are automatically relegated to the 3. Liga while the 16th team enters a promotion/relegation playoff with a team from the 3. Liga.
