Description:The top level of Russian football is known as the Russian Premier League, previously the Top League or Top Division. In 2001 the clubs in the Top Division formally broke apart from the rest of the Russian Professional Football League in a manner similar to England's Premier League.
Russian football is switching from its traditional calendar year season to a fall/winter/spring season. This will happen by extending the 2011 season to the spring of 2012, effectively making it an 18 month season divided into 2 phases. In the first phase each team plays every other team for a total of 30 games. The teams are divided into a top 8 and bottom 8 based on their finish in the first phase. The top 8 teams will play each other twice for a total of 14 games. The team with the most points at the end of the second phase is the league champion. The bottom 8 teams also play 14 games to avoid relegation. The bottom 2 are relegated automatically while the 13th and 14th teams go into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 3rd and 4th teams from the Russian First Division.
