Description:

The Scottish Football League First Division is the second tier in the Scottish football system. A second tier was added to the Scottish Football League for the 1893-94 season and it has undergone several name changes over the years, culminating in the Scottish Football League First Division since the 1975-76 season.

Format:

  • The Football League First Division season begins in August and ends in May with no winter break.
  • The 10 teams play each other four times (2 home and 2 away) for a total of 36 matches.
  • 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
  • Final league position is based on the total number of points earned over the full season.
  • The team with the most points is considered the league champion and is promoted to the Scottish Premier League.
  • The bottom team is automatically relegated to the third-tier Scottish Football League Second Division.
  • The 9th-place team enters a promotion/relegation playoff with the 2nd-4th teams from the Scottish Football League Second Division for one spot in the next season's Scottish Football League First Division.
