Spanish Segunda División B - Grupo 4

Real Federación Española de FútbolDetails:

Full Name: Segunda División B - Grupo 4
Founded: 1987 (1928)
Tier: 3
Number of Teams: 20

Description:

The Segunda División B - Grupo 4 (The Second Division B - Group 4) is one of four third-leagues in the Spanish soccer pyramid. Unlike the Primera and Segunda it is administered by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (the Royal Spanish Football Federation) - the Spanish FA.

League football started in Spain in the 1928-29 season and the third tier was initially called the Segunda División B. It was later renamed to the Tercera División. The Segunda División B was launched in the late 1970s as an intermediate level between the Segunda and Tercera, initially with only two groups and later expanded to four. Grupo 4 is for clubs from the south of the country - Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha plus Ceuta and Melilla.

League Format:

  • The Spanish Segunda Division B - Grupo 4 season begins in August and ends in May with a very short winter break.
  • The 20 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 38 matches.
  • 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
  • Final league position is based on the total number of points earned over the full season.
  • The team with the most points is considered the league champion.
  • The top 4 teams qualify for the promotion playoffs, along with 4 teams from the other 3 groups in the Segunda División B. Therefore a total of 16 teams contest a complex playoff system to determine 4 teams to be promoted to the second-tier Spanish Segunda División.
  • The bottom 4 teams are relegated to the fourth-tier Tercera División. Additionally the 16th place team enters a playoff with a 16th place finisher from one of the other Segunda División B groups. The loser of that playoff is also relegated.
