Description:

The Belgian Second Division is known as D2 in the French-speaking and the Tweede Klasse in the Dutch-speaking parts of the country. The 19 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 36 games. The champions are automatically promoted. The season is divided into three stages of 12 matches. The winners of each stage go into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 17th team from the First Division. The 4 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 6 games. The winner will play in the First Division the following season, the rest in the Second Division. The bottom two clubs are automatically relegated. The 17th club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with six teams from the Third Division. The season runs from July to May with a one month winter break.
