Description:
The league name (Campeonato Brasileiro Série C) translates as the C Series of the Brazilian Championship, the third level in the Brazilian system. Beginning with the 2009 season the Série C has a new format. The 20 teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. The teams will play every other group team twice (home and away) for a total of eight games. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals while the worst team from each group is relegated to the fourth-tier Série D in 2010. The eight teams that advance are drawn together into home and away quarterfinals, then semifinals and then a final to decide the champion. The four semifinalists are promoted to Série B for 2010.
