The top tier of the two-tier professional structure in Portugal, reflected in its name Premeira Liga (Premier League) and the name for the entire professional structure - Liga Portuguesa da Futebol Profissional (Portuguese Professional Football League). It's often known as the bwin LIGA after title sponsor bwin, an online betting company. The 16 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 30 games. The bottom two clubs are relegated. The season runs from August to May with a two week winter break.
