Eerste Divisie

Eerste DivisieFull Name: Jupiler League (Eerste Divisie)
Level: 2
Number of Teams: 20

Official Website: jupilerleague.nl

Description:

The Eerste Divisie is the second-tier league in the Dutch football pyramid and the lowest level of professional football in the country. The league is officially known as the Jupiler League after title sponsor Jupiler, a beer made by InBev. This is not to be confused (too late) with the top-tier league in Belgium, also known as the Jupiler League. Eerste Divisie translates as First Division. The 20 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 38 games. The champion is automatically promoted. The season is divided into six stages of 6-7 games each. The winner of each stage as well as the next two teams in the overall table go into a promotion/relegation playoff (the Nacomptie) with the 16th and 17th team from the Eredivisie. The bottom two clubs are relegated to the newly-created amateur third-tier league, the Topklasse. From the 2010-11 season there will only be 18 teams in the Jupiler League.

The season runs from August to May with a one month winter break.
