Description:

Professional football in the Republic of Ireland is now organized by the FAI after 85 years as an autonomous league. The official name includes that of title sponsor eircom, an Irish mobile phone company. The 10 clubs play each other four times (two home and two away) for a total of 36 games. The bottom club is relegated while the 1st team from the First Division is promoted. Additionally the 8th and 9th teams contest a relegation playoff and the loser of that match goes into a playoff against a team from the First Division. The season runs from March to November.
