Level: 2
Number of Teams:
12

Description:
Professional football in the Republic of Ireland is now organized by the FAI after 85 years as an autonomous league. The official name includes that of title sponsor eircom, an Irish mobile phone company. The 12 clubs play each other three times (two home and one away or vice-versa) for a total of 33 games. The champion is automatically promoted. The next two teams play off and the winner of that match enters a promotion/relegation playoff with the 11th team from the Premier Division. The last-placed team will potentially go into a playoff with a team from the third-tier A Championship, depending on how well the non-reserve teams finish in that league. The season runs from March to November.
