Description:

The league has been reorganized for the 2008-09 season, with a reduction to 12 clubs based on sporting, financial and other criteria and a renaming from the old Irish Premier League to the IFA Premiership. Its official name is the JJB Sports Premiership, named for the title sponsor JJB Sports. The 12 teams play each other three times for a total of 33 games. The league is then divided into a top six and bottom six and everyone plays one further match against each top or bottom opponent leading to a total of 38 games played. The bottom club is automatically relegated while the 11th-placed club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with the second best team from the second tier IFA Championship. The season runs from September to May.
