The second tier of Spanish football is officially known as the Liga Adelante as part of an agreement with title sponsors BBVA, a Spanish bank. It is technically part of the Liga de Fútbol Profesional which incorporates the top two divisions of Spanish football.

The 22 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 42 games. The top three clubs are promoted to La Liga and the bottom four relegated. to the Segunda División B. The season runs from August to June.
