Description:

The 2nd tier of Italian football is known as Serie B TIM, named after the title sponsor Italian mobile phone company TIM. The 22 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 42 games. The top two teams are automatically promoted. The 3rd place team is promoted if the difference between 3rd and 4th place is more than 9 points. If it isn't there is a playoff between the 3rd-6th teams. The bottom three teams are automatically relegated. The 19th team is relegated if the difference between 18th and 19th is less than five points. If not there is a "playout" between the 18th and 19th teams. The loser is relegated to the third-tier Lega Pro Prima Divisione. The season runs from September to June.
