Description: The Dimayor (División Mayor) Primera A is commonly known as the Copa Mustang after its title sponsor. It has actually maintained the same title sponsor since 1990, an eternity in these days of regularly shifting sponsors. The season runs from February to December with a short summer break. The season is divided into two stages - the Copa Mustang I (or the Apertura - opening) and the Copa Mustang II (also known as the finalización - closing). Each stage is divided into three parts: a regular stage of 18 games (each clubs playing each opponent once plus a 2nd match against a clasico rival), a second stage in which the top 8 teams from the regular stage are split up into two groups of four who play each other six times (home and away), and a final between the two second stage winners. There is no overall champion but instead two trophies are awarded each season. The last placed club in the overall seaon table (the regular stages of Copa Mustang I and Copa Mustang II) is relegated while the 17th club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with a team from the second-tier Primera B.
