Two continental confederations comprise the Americas region - CONCACAF for North America, Central America and the Caribbean and CONMEBOL for South America. South America has historically been the second of two main pillars of the game alongside Europe. But the CONCACAF region is steadily growing in competitiveness, with the United States and Mexico in particular a serious rival for all but the most elite opponents.
The Copa Libertadores is the premier club tournament in the region, second only to the Champions League in prestige. It includes 3-5 teams from all ten CONMEBOL members plus Mexico, whose clubs are invited guests to the tournament. It is typically held from February to June and unlike the Champions League the final is a 2-leg affair. The all-time leader in titles won is Argentina's Independiente, though they haven't won since 1984.
Other tournaments include the CONCACAF Champions League (1-4 teams from across the region) which takes place from August-May and the Copa Sudamericana, a kind of second-tier tournament for clubs from South America. The Copa Sudamericana is held in the second half of the South American season.
The Copa América is the tournament for the national teams of South America and is the oldest tournament of its kind in the world, kicking off in 1916 a full 44 years before the European Championship. It is currently held every two years and typically includes a couple of invited guests from CONCACAF, most recently Mexico and the United States. The national team championship for CONCACAF is the Gold Cup, also held every two years.
